In Utah there are fiscal year entities that hold truth-in-taxation meetings in August when they are seeking to increase taxes and there are calendar year entities which hold truth-in-taxation meetings mostly in November/December when they want to increase their revenue. Cities and School Districts mostly run on fiscal years but counties and some special service districts run on calendar years for their budget.

This year 23 calendar year taxing entities are seeking tax increases. Salt Lake, Davis and Cache counties are the ones that stand out most to us as increases to keep our eyes on. On average, counties make up about 15-20 percent of a property tax bill, school districts usually are the largest portion of a property tax bill at around 60 percent of a property tax bill.

If an entity in your area is looking to increase taxes we encourage you to attend the entity’s truth-in-taxation hearing and learn about the proposed increase.
