Utah Taxpayers Association Endorses Amendment A – Save Our Secret Ballot
Invites Candidates to Do Same
Salt Lake City – The Utah Taxpayers Association today endorsed Constitutional Amendment A, the Save Our Secret Ballot amendment.
Royce Van Tassell, vice president of the Utah Taxpayers Association, said, “Amendment A protects Utah’s sacred secret ballot. We invite all legislative and gubernatorial candidates to join with the Taxpayers Association and pledge to support Amendment A.”
Federal law has long protected the right to a secret ballot. Big Labor and its congressional allies hope to pass the deceptively named “Employee Free Choice Act” (EFCA) during the upcoming lame duck session. Without Amendment A, EFCA would abolish Utah’s right to a secret ballot in unionization elections, even if employees want a secret ballot.
Jonathan Johnson, co-chair of Save Our Secret Ballot Utah, welcomed the endorsement of the Utah Taxpayers Association. “We hope all candidates, regardless of where they stand on other issues, will join with SOS Ballot Utah and the Utah Taxpayers Association and endorse Amendment A. Amendment A should transcend partisan politics because it ensures a basic principle of fairness by including in Utah’s Constitution the right to vote by a secret ballot in important elections.”
Representative Carl Wimmer explained why he sponsored Amendment A in the Legislature. “The right to a secret ballot is a basic tenet of Utah’s democracy. Protected by a secret ballot, employees can vote without fear of manipulation, intimidation or coercion from either their employer or the union.”
Today the Utah Taxpayers Association sent the Amendment A pledge to every legislative and gubernatorial candidate in Utah, and invited each candidate to support Amendment A by signing the pledge and faxing it to the Taxpayers Association offices at 801.973.2324 by Friday, October 15.
